Very few famous people can be shown to live in the town of Vail itself. The best-documented ties belong to Gerald Ford, whose family spent decades in the valley and whose name is on Ford Park's amphitheater; to Lindsey Vonn, who grew up in Vail but sold her house there in 2020; to Mikaela Shiffrin, who lives in the wider Vail Valley; and to James Hetfield of Metallica, who said in 2016 that he had moved to Vail.

Gerald Ford: the deepest Vail connection
President Ford's link to the valley is the best documented, and the one visitors can still see. Vail-Beaver Creek Magazine traces it to Christmas 1968, when Ford, then a Michigan congressman, brought his family to the new ski town and bought a three-bedroom condo at The Lodge at Vail. After he left office, the Fords bought a home in Beaver Creek in 1982 and kept vacationing in the valley. Ford sat on the board of the Vail Valley Foundation for more than 20 years and helped raise the money that finished the amphitheater that now bears his name.
Ford Park holds the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater, which opened on June 27, 1987. The Fords and Bob Hope were in the audience for the opening celebration, and Willie Nelson played the first major concert two weeks later. The venue hosts Bravo! Vail or the Vail Valley?
The town of Vail is only one community in the valley. Shiffrin's house is in Edwards and the Fords' was in Beaver Creek, so neither is a town-of-Vail address, though both are Vail Valley stories. Vonn's case runs the other way: she grew up in Vail and says it is still home for some of her family, but she no longer owns a house there. Someone can be closely tied to Vail without living in it.

- Buy a ticket for an event at the Ford Amphitheater, where performers and festival artists are named in advance. Concerts are the dependable way to see famous performers in Vail.
