How a fitting works

Every fitting starts with a scan on a 538-point pressure-mapping board, which records both the shape of your foot and how your weight falls on it. A fitter then picks a shell from more than 100 models, an in-house mill cuts a custom orthotic while you wait, and a memory-foam liner is injected around your foot inside the boot. The foam sets in about five minutes. Plan on 45 to 60 minutes in all.

If you already own boots

You do not have to buy a new shell. Surefoot liners and orthotics can go into boots you already own, and it also sells stock boots fitted at no extra charge, with custom parts as an optional upgrade. That makes it a sensible stop mid-trip when a familiar pair has started to hurt.

After the fitting

Follow-up adjustments are free for the life of the boot, and any Surefoot store can make them. Custom work is covered by the company's fit guarantee, which is useful for visitors who ski Vail one week and somewhere else the next.

Planning your visit

Appointments fill quickly in peak season, so book online or by phone before the trip. The shop is steps from the Gondola One base, next to the Christiania and the Lodge at Vail, so you can walk from the fitting to the lift. Drivers can use the Vail Village parking structure, about five minutes away on foot.
