Snow can reach Vail as early as September and falls in most Octobers, but the ski season does not wait for it. Vail Resorts called October 3, 2023 the first official snow of that season, yet Vail Mountain opened on November 10. In 2025 it opened on November 14 after a dry autumn, with only 15 inches of natural snow by December 1. Snowmaking and cold nights set the opening far more than the first storm.

Opening day barely moves (November 10 to 15 in these seasons) while the snow behind it varies widely. Vail Resorts' 2026/27 plan lists Friday, November 13, 2026 as the target, subject to weather. The opening-day guide covers the terrain that has opened each time.
When the first snow usually falls
The Western Regional Climate Center's record for a weather station in the town of Vail covers 1985 to 2005. Snow fell in September in 6 of the 21 seasons measured (a September average of 1.1 inches, with a high of 8 inches in 1996) and in October in 16 of 21. October snowfall averaged 7.5 inches and ranged from none to 17 inches; November averaged 31.1 inches. So a first dusting in late September or October is normal, but it is November when the snow starts to stack up.
Later figures put February at the top: National Centers for Environmental Information data for 1991 to 2020 show February as the town's snowiest month at about 35 inches, ahead of March at 28.2 inches and April at 21.2 inches.
Why the mountain holds snow
Vail Mountain has a base elevation of 8,120 feet, a summit at 11,570 feet and average snowfall of 354 inches. In November 2023 an 18-inch mid-mountain base held through warm spells, which Vail Daily credited to the high-elevation, north-facing slopes.
Snowmaking sets the opening
Vail has more than 500 acres of snowmaking terrain, largely from a 2019 project that added 421 energy-efficient guns and moved snowmaking up to Mid-Vail, where colder temperatures arrive sooner. Among them are 70 fixed guns along Mid-Vail runs, Ramshorn, Swingsville and The Meadows, which Vail describes as signature beginner and intermediate terrain. Snowmakers can start once the wet-bulb temperature reaches 28 degrees. Wet-bulb factors in humidity, so it is not the reading on an ordinary thermometer, and the best snowmaking conditions sit around 10 degrees wet-bulb. Vail says the guns cut snowmaking energy by 85 percent and that 75 percent of the water used returns to the local watershed.
Snowmaking still depends on the weather. In November 2025 warm temperatures forced Colorado resorts to shut off snowguns for extended periods, and a forecaster quoted at the time said early-season snowfall has little correlation with snow for the rest of the season.
An early forecast is not a first-snow date
Vail Resorts' August 18, 2026 release ties its optimism about the 2026/27 season to a forecast Super El Niño while noting that no one can predict what the weather will deliver. The 2025/26 season shows the risk: it produced the worst snowpack on record at the Vail Mountain SNOTEL site, which goes back to 1978-79, and the mountain closed early on April 8, 2026.
