November in Vail is a month in two parts. Until Vail Mountain opens, the town is between seasons; after opening day, the villages fill with early-season events, the ice rinks and holiday village start up, and Thanksgiving weekend gives the month its busiest stretch. For 2026, Vail Resorts has said Vail Mountain plans to open on November 13, with Breckenridge on November 6 and Beaver Creek on November 25, all subject to weather and snow conditions. Opening dates move every year, so confirm the date on vail.com before you book.
Where November sits between the seasons
The 2026 summer gondola season ran Friday to Sunday only, September 11 to 27. There is no scenic gondola ride in October or early November, and lift operation resumes with the ski season. Vail in October covers the quiet weeks before it.
Weather
NOAA's 1991–2020 monthly normals for the Vail weather station (in town, at roughly 8,300 feet) give a November average high of 38°F, an average low of 15°F and average snowfall of 26 inches. That is a big step from October (54°F high, 9 inches of snow) and a small one from December (28°F high, 28 inches). Plan for winter clothing from the start of the month, and check the forecast, since individual Novembers vary widely.
Skiing in the first weeks
Terrain depends on natural snowfall and snowmaking, but Discover Vail, the town's visitor site, describes more than 1,000 acres open on opening weekend as common, with more lifts and runs following quickly. When conditions cooperate, runs are open at Mid-Vail and off the Avanti lift, not just low on the mountain, and by mid-December most of the Front Side, more than 3,000 acres, is usually open. A Back Bowl has opened this early in some years, though it cannot be counted on. Mid-November to about the third week of December is also the stretch of shorter lift lines. The Dobson concert is ticketed at $20 plus fees, general admission and all ages, and marks the reopening of the arena after a renovation the town puts at more than $55 million. The Lionshead tree lighting, held on Saturday, November 29 in 2025 with a skating exhibition and a Santa visit, has no 2026 date posted yet. The Vail Farmers' Market runs Sundays from mid-June to early October, so it is over by November.
Thanksgiving in Vail
Thanksgiving Day is November 26 in 2026. Several restaurants serve holiday menus, and tables fill, so call early:
- Tavernetta and The Remedy, both inside Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail, with reservations opening 60 days ahead for resort guests and 30 days for everyone else.
- The Fitz, which overlooks Golden Peak, and Ridge + River at Manor Vail Lodge.
- Vail Chophouse, which serves a prix fixe holiday menu from 3 pm and requires reservations.

Off the mountain
- The Colorado Snowsports Museum is free, open daily from 10 am to 6 pm, and sits on the third level of the Vail Village parking structure.
- The Imagination Station in Lionshead is a year-round indoor play space run by the Vail Recreation District. Entry is by reservation, listed at $18 per child with adults free, and hours vary.
- Ice skating runs November to April at the Alderhof rink at The Arrabelle at Vail Square and at Solaris Plaza; check the rink for its opening day.
- Snowshoe season starts in mid-November depending on snow, with rentals at the Vail Nordic Center.
Roads and trails in November
CO 82 over Independence Pass typically closes on or near November 7, depending on weather, and reopens the Thursday before Memorial Day; CDOT points travelers to COtrip.org for status. Hunting is also a factor on public land: Colorado Parks and Wildlife runs several big-game rifle seasons through the fall and recommends that non-hunters wear fluorescent orange or pink, especially during muzzleloader and rifle seasons.
