Vail has two high seasons, winter skiing and summer on the mountain, with a quiet stretch between them, so the best time depends on what you came to do. Vail Resorts' own ski guide calls January and February the golden window for snow, and mid-June to early September is the window for hiking, rafting, the scenic gondolas and outdoor concerts. Late April, May and October are the value months, and each comes with real limits on what is open.

The temperatures and snowfall below are NOAA's 1991–2020 monthly normals for the Vail weather station in town, at about 8,300 feet. The mountain gets far more snow than the village: Vail's mountain page puts its average at 354 inches a season.

Winter: November to April
Vail Resorts announced on August 18, 2026 that Vail Mountain plans to open on November 13 for the 2026/27 season, weather permitting. Beaver Creek and Crested Butte follow on November 25. Colorado's ski season typically starts in mid to late November and runs into early to mid-April, and Vail's closing day usually falls in April. It can move a lot with the snow year: closing day was set for April 20 in 2025 and came on April 8 in 2026, after the lowest snowpack on record at the mountain's automated snow-measurement site. The 354-inch average is a long-run figure, and individual seasons vary.
January and February combine the deepest base with the fewest people once the holidays end. March swaps some of that snow for milder afternoons, which suits families and spring-break trips. April brings warmer weather and fewer crowds, though terrain may be limited and closes in stages late in the season. Lodging and lift tickets sell out fast around holidays, so book those weeks early. Spring: the gap between seasons
Once the lifts close in April and before the summer gondolas start in June, the mountain itself has little to offer, and the village is the draw. May highs average about 60 degrees with lows near 31, higher trails can hold snow patches, and Discover Vail's spring restaurant guide shows places reopening week by week. Summer: mid-June to early September
Whitewater rafting typically runs from June to early September, horseback riding from late May, with some outfitters going into October, and the Vail Farmers Market and Art Show fills Vail Village on Sundays from mid-June through early October. Epic Discovery on Vail Mountain runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily from June through Labor Day weekend, then Friday to Sunday in September; the 2026 schedule ends September 27. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the mountains, and Epic Discovery closes for lightning, so the mountain is best in the morning. For music, the Bravo! Fall: late September and October
Fall sits between the summer and winter seasons. Highs drop from the 60s to the 50s and snow starts to fall in town by October. Oktoberfest brought two weekends of events in 2026, September 11 to 13 in Lionshead and September 18 to 20 in Vail Village; the Oktoberfest guide explains the format. Crowds and the drive
Staying Sunday to Thursday makes summer activities and restaurants easier to book, and I-70 toward Vail is much less congested than on Fridays, or leaving Vail on Sundays.
