What you can do in Vail in April depends on when the mountain closes, and that date has swung by almost two weeks in recent years. Closing day was set for April 20 in 2024-25. In 2025-26 it was planned for April 19, then pulled forward to April 8 after the worst snowpack on record at Vail's automated SNOTEL measuring site, which goes back to the 1978-79 season. April is the start of the off-season for many Vail restaurants, and some restaurants, bars and nightlife spots close for part or all of it, so call ahead before you plan a dinner around one. Walking and hiking in April
The Gore Creek Path is the reliable spring walk: a paved 1.8-mile route along Gore Creek from Lionshead to Donovan Park. Higher trails behave differently. The Booth Lake Trail can hold snow patches early in the season, and hikers are asked to choose another trail through June 6 because of wildlife sensitivity. Muddy trails are best left alone, too.
