Choosing a Vail hotel comes down to two questions: which village you want to sleep in, and how you will reach the mountain. Vail Village is the pedestrian center of town, at the base of Gondola One. Lionshead, at the base of the Eagle Bahn Gondola, mixes full-service hotels with condo buildings that have kitchens. Golden Peak, at the east end of Vail Village, sits beside the children's ski school. Cascade Village, West Vail and East Vail sit outside the two villages and depend on a shuttle, a bus or a car.

Vail Village: closest to Gondola One
Vail Village is where the walk to dinner is short and the gondola is close. A free bus links it with Lionshead and Golden Peak, and the Vail Village Parking Structure at 241 South Frontage Road East is the public garage for hotels without their own.
The Lodge at Vail
Opened in 1962 as Vail's first hotel, the Lodge at Vail stands at the base of Vail Mountain, and Vail Resorts presents it as ski-in/ski-out, steps from Gondola One. The outdoor pool has a poolside bar and two hot tubs, the fitness center is open 24 hours, and the RockResorts Spa has 11 treatment rooms. Dinner is Elway's, a steakhouse; Cucina is the breakfast room and fireside cocktail bar. There is a free local shuttle and valet parking, and pets are accepted on a limited basis. Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail
The Four Seasons handles the ski day through the Chalet, a guest-only base a short walk or shuttle ride from the hotel to the foot of Gondola One, where boots are warmed and skis and snowboards stay overnight. The Chalet closes from April to early June and from Labor Day to November 13. Rooms and suites have gas fireplaces, and the private residences, up to six bedrooms, have full kitchens. The heated outdoor pool is open every day of the year to overnight guests, the spa has 13 treatment rooms with a sauna, steam room and cold plunge, and the fitness centre is open around the clock.
Three restaurants carry the dining: Tavernetta Vail for Italian dinners with handmade pasta, The Remedy for all-day dining and a firepit patio, and Speyside Café for daytime dining. Families get a teen centre, babysitting and free meals for young children at Tavernetta and The Remedy. Underground valet parking is available. Pets under 25 pounds are accepted in guest rooms, but not in the residences, restaurants, spa, fitness centre or pool. Sonnenalp
Pick Sonnenalp when dinner and the children matter as much as the skiing. Its restaurants welcome visitors as well as guests: Swiss Chalet for fondue, raclette and schnitzel, Bully Ranch, open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, and Ludwig's, which serves breakfast and, in winter, dinner. Children 12 and under stay free in a parent's room (two children maximum), and the kids club takes ages 5 to 12 from Tuesday to Saturday evenings by reservation.
The spa admits outside guests who book a treatment, and the year-round pool is part indoor and part outdoor. Sonnenalp is not ski-in/ski-out. The ski concierge, open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. in winter, keeps a private lounge at Gorsuch Ski Café, steps from Gondola One. The golf course is a 16-mile drive away in Edwards. The Sebastian - Vail
An 84-room hotel with 37 private residences at 16 Vail Road, the Sebastian is built around its pool: heated, open year-round from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., with a waterfall, benches under the water and four hot tubs, two of them adults-only. Children 4 and under have the Tykes Room, everyone has a game room, and a coffee station runs from 5 to 11 a.m. Zuma Vail, a Japanese izakaya-style restaurant, is on the upper level; The Gambit Bar is in the lobby. Bloom Spa is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Sebastian is not ski-in/ski-out. Guests are fitted for rentals at the Adventure Concierge in the lobby, and their gear goes to Base Camp, a guest-only shop and storage room at the foot of Gondola One, a 5 to 10 minute walk away with transport on request. Gravity Haus Vail
Gravity Haus, at 352 East Meadow Drive on Gore Creek, is the hotel to choose if a coworking space and a gym matter on the same trip. Rooms range from queen-bed rooms to two- and three-bedroom condos with kitchens, and the walk to Gondola 1 crosses the river bridge. Slope Room serves dinner and après from 5 to 9 p.m. daily, and Unravel Coffee opens at 7 a.m. Recovery facilities include a hot tub, sauna, steam room, cold plunge and salt lounge; the gym, classes and coworking space are for guests and members, with day passes for others. Self-parking runs about $60 a day and valet $80, and dog-ready rooms carry a pet fee. Anyone can book, and members get 50 percent off stays.
More Vail Village lodges, close to the lifts
These lodges and residences sit close to Gondola One, and most fold breakfast, storage or amenities into a daily fee. Parking is the pinch point: several have a limited number of spaces.
Christiania Lodge at Vail
Twenty steps from Gondola One is the lodge's own measure, and Christiania calls the winter arrangement true ski-in/ski-out, with adult ski school meeting at the base of the gondola and Golden Peak an easy walk for children. The lodge at 356 Hanson Ranch Road has 22 rooms and suites, and the same office rents more than 30 condos in nearby buildings, where parking rules differ. A 7.2% resort fee covers the outdoor heated pool, Wi-Fi and, in winter, ski storage with boot dryers. Lodge parking costs $50 a night in winter and $25 in summer. Sarah's Lounge serves après from Thursday to Sunday, and breakfast from December through April carries a charge. Dogs are not allowed.
Vail's Mountain Haus
Most of what Vail's Mountain Haus offers is included in the room: the outdoor heated pool, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, sauna and steam rooms, renovated fitness center, hot yoga room, laundry and coffee and tea are free, and only massage costs extra. The lodge sits beside the Covered Bridge at 292 East Meadow Drive, 100 meters from Gondola One in winter and on the free town shuttle route. Units range from hotel-style rooms to five-bedroom condos, the front desk is staffed around the clock, and parking is $60 a night. The George, an American pub open daily from 5 p.m., is part of the lodge's amenities.
Lodge Tower
No resort fee, a year-round heated pool and hot tub, and 100 yards to Gondola One: that is the case for Lodge Tower. Built in 1974, it has lodge rooms and multi-bedroom condos, a 24-hour front desk, a bell staff and ski valet, covered on-site parking and an in-town shuttle. Breakfast runs 7 to 10:30 a.m. daily, with rotating hot dishes in winter.
Sitzmark Vail
Thirty-six rooms sit 100 yards from Gondola One and the ticket offices at Sitzmark, on Gore Creek Drive. Guests get a heated pool and hot tub on the second floor, a fitness center, a ski storage room and a complimentary continental breakfast from 7:15 to 9:30 a.m. The King Kitchenette Suite is the choice for self-catering. The Left Bank, a traditional French restaurant in the same building, opens at 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Covered parking is limited and not guaranteed, at $60 a night with a clearance of roughly 7 feet, and one dog per room costs $55 a night plus tax. Rooms are on Hotels.com.
Tivoli Lodge
A family has run Tivoli Lodge since it opened in 1968, and the building was rebuilt in 2006. Of its 65 rooms and suites, many have fireplaces, and the one-bedroom and two-king suites have kitchens. The lifts and Gondola One are within one block, out the back, and the village center is a two-to-three minute walk. A hot breakfast buffet runs 7 to 9:30 a.m. for a fee, and a 10.5% daily resort amenities fee plus tax covers Wi-Fi, in-room water and coffee, winter ski valet and après, Peloton classes and summer e-bikes. There is no pool, but a mountainside hot tub and fire pit stay open all year, and the Brown Hound Lounge is the lobby bar.
Valet parking covers one vehicle at $50 a night in winter, $45 in summer and $23 in October; two Tesla connectors are on site. Dogs are accepted in a limited number of rooms at $100 per pet per stay. Compare dates on Hotels.com.
Austria Haus
Breakfast is the draw at Austria Haus: an expanded European-style breakfast, 7 to 10 a.m. on weekdays and 7 to 11 a.m. on weekends, with coffee and tea all day. The property has welcomed guests since the mid-1960s and holds 25 hotel rooms and 18 club condominiums beside the Covered Bridge. Its heated pool and hot tub, open year-round, overlook Gore Creek, and slope-side ski storage is at Gondola One, a two-minute walk. Loaded Joe's is the on-site coffee shop and bar. Valet parking costs extra and a daily destination fee, which covers breakfast for up to two guests, is added. Pets are not allowed. Availability is on Hotels.com.
Hotel Gasthof Gramshammer
Austrian cooking anchors Hotel Gasthof Gramshammer, at 231 East Gore Creek Drive: Pepi's Bar and Restaurant serves Wiener schnitzel and Hungarian veal goulash alongside continental dishes, with a deck that is open in both summer and winter. Every room includes a continental breakfast from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. and free ski storage, the slopes are a three-to-four minute walk, and Pepi Sports, on site since 1968, gives guests a discount on rentals. The hotel has a jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and fitness room, and massages are arranged through the front desk. Covered parking is limited, charged daily and first come, with no space for large vehicles. There is no air conditioning, and pets are not accepted.
Solaris Residences
Solaris is a residence building with a hotel's services: gourmet kitchens and gas fireplaces in the units, a heated indoor pool and hot tub, a 24-hour fitness center and front desk, and GLO Mind Body Skin, a spa with three treatment rooms and no steam room or sauna. Ski gear goes to lockers at Gorsuch Ski Café, steps from Gondola One. Heated underground parking is valet-only at $65 a night, and guests get priority reservations at Matsuhisa and Deca+Bol. Golden Peak: the family end of the village
Golden Peak is the base of the Riva Bahn chairlift and the home of the children's ski school. Both properties here are a walk from Vail Village. The Golden Peak guide covers the base area.
Manor Vail Lodge
Manor Vail describes its position as near-slope rather than ski-in/ski-out. The lodge, at 595 Vail Valley Drive, is a short stroll from the Golden Peak chairlift, rental shop and ski school, and a five-minute walk from Gondola One. Every residence has a full kitchen, gas fireplace and private balcony. Two heated outdoor pools and four hot tubs stay open year-round, the fitness center has Peloton bikes, and four cruiser bikes are free for guests. The Fitz is open daily from noon to 9 p.m., with happy hour from 2 to 4; Ridge + River is the mountainside kitchen, and BioMed Spa Vail is the on-site spa for massage, facials and recovery treatments. The Wren at Vail
The Wren, in the Golden Peak neighborhood, is set up for a lesson-day routine: guests walk, or ride the complimentary shuttle, to the Golden Peak Riva Bahn chairlift or Gondola One, and the Golden Peak ski school and child care are within walking distance. The condos run from studios to three bedrooms with kitchens and gas fireplaces. A heated pool, two hot tubs and three gas grills stay open year-round, parking is free, and Tuesday welcome parties serve wine and cheese in winter and barbecue in summer. The village is a five-minute walk; pets are not allowed.
Lionshead: the Eagle Bahn Gondola

The Arrabelle at Vail Square
Vail Resorts describes the Arrabelle as ski-in/ski-out, steps from the Eagle Bahn Gondola, with a slopeside ski and boot valet and a ski concierge. Amenities include a year-round heated pool, rooftop hot tubs and lap pool, and a 10,000-square-foot RockResorts Spa with 11 treatment rooms and a nail salon. The Ritz-Carlton Club, Vail
Two-, three- and four-bedroom residences with gourmet kitchens and private balconies fill the Ritz-Carlton Club at 728 West Lionshead Circle, on the western edge of Lionshead Village at the base of Vail Mountain. It suits guests who want to cook and want service without a restaurant schedule: the only venue is The Lobby Lounge, and there is no room service or complimentary breakfast. The outdoor heated pool and whirlpool are open, the fitness center runs 24 hours, and the concierge arranges spa treatments. The Hythe
Four places to eat and drink sit under one roof at The Hythe, a Marriott Bonvoy resort five minutes' walk from the Eagle Bahn Gondola: Margie's Haas for breakfast, Revel Lounge from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, the 10th Mountain lobby bar, and Mountain Ration for grab-and-go. The year-round outdoor pool and hot tub, and a fitness center that never closes, sit alongside the Well & Being Spa, open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for guests 16 and over. Every booking of 50 minutes or longer includes three hours of access to the pool, fitness center, salt therapy room and steam room. Lion Square Lodge at the Gondola
Lion Square Lodge, at 660 Lionshead Place, describes itself as ski-in/ski-out, in the ski yard beside the Eagle Bahn Gondola. Heated underground parking is free for guests, and ski valet storage is complimentary. A Charter Sports rental shop is on site, changing rooms open before check-in and after check-out, and the desk is staffed around the clock. The lodge has an outdoor pool and hot tubs, a fitness center and concierge babysitting. Trails End serves tacos and tapas from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily on a deck with live music.
Antlers at Vail
Every condo at Antlers at Vail has a full kitchen and dining area, and the hotel charges no resort fees. Wi-Fi, housekeeping, the pool, fitness center and winter snowshoe and sled loans are included, and a borrowing program stocks kitchen appliances. The outdoor heated pool and two hot tubs are open daily all year, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and there are two saunas. The heated garage costs $50 a day, with one space per condo, and the fee is waived on direct bookings; garage height is 7 feet 2 inches, and the hotel recommends nothing larger than a minivan. Epic Mountain Rentals runs a ski valet tent at the base of the Lionshead gondola. Pets stay in about 20% of units at $50 plus tax per pet a day, so call ahead for a pet-friendly one. The Lion
Residences from studios to four bedrooms fill The Lion, with an indoor infinity pool, an outdoor saline hot tub, a steam room, a fitness center, a game room with a billiards table, a children's playroom and an underground heated garage that charges a fee. Ski lockers with boot dryers, an on-demand skier shuttle and a ski shop with Venture Sports rentals round out the ski setup. Restaurants and shops are in Lionshead Village. See Expedia for dates.
Lodge at Lionshead
Kitchens and a parking space come with every unit at Lodge at Lionshead, at 380 East Lionshead Circle: fully equipped kitchens in every condo, kitchenettes in some studios, and one space per reservation. It sits along the Gore Creek path just east of Lionshead Village, less than 200 yards from the Eagle Bahn Gondola, and the free town shuttle to Vail Village comes about every 10 minutes, or the walk takes 10 to 15. The pool and hot tubs are open from mid-November to mid-April and from Memorial Day weekend to late September. Extras include a Peloton bike, lobby coffee and tea, summer cruiser bikes, winter snowshoes, a free pack 'n play and rental cribs and highchairs. Pets are not permitted.
Town Center and Cascade Village
Evergreen Lodge
Between Vail Village and Lionshead, Evergreen Lodge puts the free town shuttle on Meadow Drive outside its back door, so either gondola is a short walk or a short ride. Two restaurants share the building: Altitude Bar and Grill, a sports bar with a large projection screen, and Annapurna, serving Nepali and Indian dishes. The outdoor pool is open in summer only; a hot tub, two dry saunas and a fitness center are also on site, and ski, snowboard and bike storage is free. The $35 plus tax nightly resort fee includes parking for one vehicle, and dogs are accepted in ground-floor rooms at $40 plus tax a night. Rooms are on Hotels.com.
Grand Hyatt Vail
Grand Hyatt Vail trades the villages for a chairlift of its own: Chair 20, operated by Vail Resorts, gives ski-in/ski-out access from the resort, with a ticket office, ski valet and Venture Sports rental delivery on site. Vail Village and Lionshead are just over a mile away, and a guest-only shuttle runs between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. The outdoor heated pool has two large hot tubs, with cold plunges and saunas from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the spa opens Tuesday to Saturday. Seven venues include Gessner Colorado Mountain Grill, Makoto Vail (reservations are highly recommended) and a summer pool bar. Cribs, highchairs, kids menus, an arcade and family suites cover families.
Costs to plan for: a $68 daily resort fee, valet parking from $62 and self-parking from $18. Two dogs up to 70 pounds are welcome at $150 for stays up to six nights. Personal ski equipment is stored free. Rates are on Expedia, and the Hyatt page has current fees.
West Vail and East Vail: a bus or a short drive
These properties are outside the two villages. West Vail sits on the North and South Frontage Roads; East Vail's Racquet Club is at I-70 exit 180. What they give back, at several properties, is easier parking terms. The Vail parking guide covers the public garages if you drive in for a day.
Highline Vail, a DoubleTree by Hilton
Six to eight minutes by car from the ski resort, Highline Vail at 2211 North Frontage Road West runs an on-demand shuttle to three access points for the mountain, first come, first served. A $45 daily resort fee covers Wi-Fi, parking, the amenities, the shuttle and discounted rentals at Charter Sports, the rental shop inside the hotel. The heated pool, oversized hot tub and outdoor fireplaces are on the grounds, and suites have kitchens while other rooms have a mini fridge and Keurig. Breakfast is grab-and-go. Dining includes Del Toro, with Mazatlán-inspired seafood, the Pivot62 lobby lounge, The West Side Café next door, which is independently operated, and Made Market, open 24 hours. Up to two dogs are welcome at $100 each, one time. Safeway is a five-minute walk.
Marriott's West Vail properties
Marriott has two properties here. Residence Inn Vail, at 1783 North Frontage Road, includes a free hot breakfast (6:30 to 9:30 a.m. weekdays, 7 to 10 a.m. weekends), a whirlpool, fitness center and convenience store. Parking is $45 a day, and up to two pets of 80 pounds each are welcome at $150 per stay. Marriott's StreamSide, at 2284 South Frontage Road West, is split into three villa buildings, Birch, Douglas and Evergreen. Indoor and outdoor pools, a whirlpool, a fitness center, a racquetball and basketball court, a game room, a playground and on-site laundry serve all three, parking is $15 a day, a complimentary shuttle runs to Vail Mountain, and pets are not allowed.
Vail Racquet Club Mountain Resort
Free parking for two vehicles on direct bookings, a free bus with two stops on the grounds and eight EV chargers make Vail Racquet Club, at 4695 Vail Racquet Club Drive in East Vail, a car-friendly choice. The ride to the Vail Transportation Center takes 15 to 20 minutes, so skiers commute rather than walk. Guests use the athletic club at no charge: a 25-meter heated outdoor pool open all year, three hot tubs, saunas and steam rooms, a gym and free classes. A playground and barbecue patio serve children, kids cost nothing extra, and pack-n-plays are free. The buildings are stair-access only, none of the units is ADA-accessible and pets are not allowed. Après Cafe, on the resort grounds, is independently operated and seasonal.
