The menu

The burger list runs from the signature Bully Bourbon, with smoked cheddar, bacon and a bourbon apple glaze, to the Gore Range, a double with house Thousand Island, and a chickpea and quinoa patty for vegetarians, each with a side. Starters include wings, truffle tots and pork carnitas nachos, a brick oven turns out pizzas, and larger plates run to baby back ribs, beef fajitas and a dry-aged steak frites. Vegan and gluten-free versions are available on request.

Drinks

Weihenstephaner lager and hefeweizen are poured by the half liter and the liter, next to Colorado drafts from Outer Range and Vail Brewing. The Mudslide, a blended vodka, Irish cream and Kahlúa drink, is the house's best-known cocktail, and the Riva's Ridge is made with rye from Vail's 10th Mountain distillery.

When to go

Service runs straight through the afternoon, so Bully Ranch works for a late lunch when many kitchens are between services. The patio is the draw on a sunny day, and the hotel pitches the room for happy hour and après ski as much as for dinner.

Inside the Sonnenalp

Sonnenalp Vail is the family-owned hotel at 20 Vail Road, beside Gore Creek in Vail Village, that runs Bully Ranch. It has suites, a spa with indoor and outdoor pools, and several restaurants and bars, all open to visitors as well as hotel guests.

Swiss Chalet is the hotel's chalet-style dinner room for fondue, raclette and schnitzel. It suits families and groups who want a long, shared meal; reservations are recommended.

Ludwig's serves the daily breakfast buffet on its glass-walled, creekside Terrace, and in winter turns into a reservation-only dinner room, Ludwig's Elevated Dining.

Treff Café is the hotel's European-style café and bar for espresso, pastries, sandwiches and paninis, with patio seating.

King's Club (hotel page) is the fireside bar, with cocktails, wine, German beer and live music on set nights. Seating is first come, first served. It has no VailVacay listing.

Sonnenalp Spa offers massages and treatments and the hotel's indoor and outdoor pools along Gore Creek.
