Sitzmark Vail is a 36-room boutique hotel on Gore Creek Drive, on the creek in the pedestrian heart of Vail Village and about 100 yards from Gondola One. The building also holds the Left Bank, a French restaurant that has been part of Vail Village for five decades, and Archetype Distillery's tasting room, so dinner and a cocktail are under the same roof.

The Sitzmark suits couples, small families and friends who want to walk everywhere and don't need resort-scale facilities. It also welcomes one dog per room.

Rooms

Rooms face either Gore Creek or the mountain, and every one has a private balcony. King rooms add a workstation and a sleeper sofa; junior suites add a gas fireplace, and there are lofts and a top-floor penthouse for larger groups. A limited number of rooms adjoin, and accessible rooms are available.

Skiing and summer

Gondola One and the ticket offices are about 100 yards away. That is a short walk, not ski-in/ski-out, and the hotel keeps a ski and snowboard storage room so gear stays close. Guests get discounted rentals through American Ski Exchange. In summer there are complimentary cruiser bikes; in winter, skates and snowshoes.

A continental breakfast of pastries, fruit, oatmeal and breakfast sandwiches is served in the lobby each morning, and there is seasonal après coffee and cocoa by the indoor-outdoor fireplace. The heated pool and hot tub sit on a second-floor deck overlooking the village and mountain, and there is a fitness center and the Sitz Market for drinks and snacks. There is no on-site spa.

Parking is the main catch: a limited number of covered spaces at a nightly charge, first come first served and not guaranteed, with a low clearance. Overflow parking is at the town structure a five-minute walk away. One dog per room is allowed for a nightly fee, and a resort fee covers breakfast, the pool, Wi-Fi and daily housekeeping. Chef-owner Jean-Michel Chelain serves traditional French cooking from scratch, with a main dining room, a lounge for cocktails and a wine list of more than 350 labels. Archetype Distillery runs its Vail tasting room in the same building, at 183 Gore Creek Drive #7, pouring gins and vodkas distilled from wine grapes, cocktails and light bites. It also hosts cocktail classes and small events; the hotel's favourite order is the Sitz Spritz.
