Tavern on the Square
Tavern on the Square sits in the Arrabelle, just steps from the Eagle Bahn Gondola. Vail Resorts describes two ways to eat here: a quick-service walk-up bar with dining on the square and gastropub food, or a reservations-only à la carte experience on the mountain side and the patio. Posted hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, with a patio that has mountain views. If you want a table on the patio side, reserve rather than walk up. Garfinkel's
Locally owned and open since 1992, Garfinkel's is a sports bar with a large sunny deck that looks toward the gondola and Vail Mountain. The kitchen hours it posts are noon to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday, noon to 9 p.m. Friday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends, and it takes online orders. It is the practical pick for a casual lunch or an afternoon drink after skiing or biking, and the deck is the reason to go when the weather is good.
Bart & Yeti's
Tucked into the Lifthouse Lodge, Bart & Yeti's is a bar and eats joint serving burgers, ribs, wings and barbecue. Discover Vail's nightlife guide pictures it as a log-cabin bar with a large patio that works for afternoon, après and late night. Call ahead for current hours.
Family stops and quick bites
Vail Blue Moose Pizza
Blue Moose has served New York-style pizza in the Vail Valley since 1995. The Vail location at 675 Lionshead Place, #170 is a short walk from the ice rink and a little farther from the slopes, and it is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Lunch specials run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a daily après window from 2 to 4 p.m. It suits groups with mixed tastes, and the pizzeria has a group-dining page for larger parties. In winter it pairs naturally with a skate at the rink beside it.
Les Délices de France
Les Délices de France is a locally owned deli near the Eagle Bahn Gondola, open since 1984, serving Lavazza coffee, fresh pastries, smoothies and juices. The crêpe menu includes sweet versions (one with Nutella, strawberries, bananas and whipped cream; another with dulce de leche, bananas and pecans), a ham and cheese savory crêpe, and gluten-free crêpes. It is at 531 E Lionshead Circle, open 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., making it a breakfast and early-lunch stop rather than a dinner one.
Häagen-Dazs
The Häagen-Dazs shop is listed by the brand at the Arrabelle at Vail Square, 675 Lionshead Place, Building A. Its posted hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, which makes it an easy after-dinner stop on the way back from Montauk or the Chophouse.
Dinner: seafood and steak
Montauk Seafood Grill
Montauk Seafood Grill is at 549 E Lionshead Circle and is marking its 37th year in Lionshead Village. It serves dinner only, 5 to 9 p.m. every day. Its menu features oysters, chilled seafood platters with lobster and king crab, miso-glazed Chilean sea bass and seared ahi tuna, plus a wine list of more than 120 bottles. Tables are booked online through OpenTable, parties of seven or more should call 970.476.2601, and walk-ins are welcome in the dining room and at the bar, where the full menu is served first come, first served. Vail Chophouse
Vail Chophouse at 675 Lionshead Place bills itself as a slopeside steak and seafood restaurant with lunch, après and dinner service and a spacious mountainside patio with live music in the afternoons. Music reservations must be made by phone (970.477.0555), and the restaurant runs live music only at the Vail location, not at its Beaver Creek sister restaurant. One more après option: Trails End
Trails End Restaurant, part of the Lion Square Lodge, is at 660 Lionshead Place. Discover Vail pictures it as steps from the Eagle Bahn Gondola, with après specials from tapas to tacos. Some Vail restaurants close for part of spring and fall, so call ahead on a shoulder-season visit.
