AlpenDogs, on West Lionshead Circle, builds its menu around the French-style hot dog: an applewood-smoked pork Strasbourg sausage slid into a hollowed-out baguette rather than a bun. There are five versions, from the house Traditional with raw onions and a curry-harissa Samouraï sauce to a Parisian finished with Mornay sauce and melted Gruyère and Fontina.

The other half of the counter is soft-serve frozen custard. Together they make AlpenDogs a quick, inexpensive stop for families with hungry children, people between activities, and anyone who wants something good in hand while walking through Lionshead.

The hot dogs

Beyond the Traditional and the Parisian, Le Coney Island adds all-meat chili, Dijon, hot onions and cheddar; the Angoulême is a Provençal spin on a New York street dog with sauerkraut; and Le Clark, named for a Paris hot dog shop, brings bacon bits, fried onions, cornichon relish and barbecue sauce. A combo adds a drink and a bag of Zapp's chips.

The custard comes in French vanilla, chocolate or a twist, in sizes from a two-dollar mini to a waffle cone, with sprinkles, Oreo crumbles, caramel, hot fudge or a chocolate dip for a little extra. There are sundaes, a macadamia nut parfait and milkshakes, including a chocolate malt.
