About

Vail Golf Club is the town's public 18-hole course, laid out along Gore Creek on Sunburst Drive, about two miles east of Vail Village. Ben Krueger, one of Vail's pioneers, designed and built it in 1962, and it is run today by the Vail Recreation District, so anyone can book a tee time.

It suits visiting golfers who want a full round without a membership or a long drive, and it is friendly to walkers: the club calls it the valley's most walkable course. The Gore Range fills the skyline, and the altitude adds distance to every drive.

The course

The par-71 layout measures 6,739 yards from the back tees, with tree-lined, mostly flat fairways. Bunkers and beaver ponds do the defending, and the greens follow the creek beside the White River National Forest. Golf Digest has named it a Top 100 Resort Course. The forward tees carry a much gentler rating than the tips, so the course works for mixed-ability groups, and a strict 4:07 pace of play keeps rounds moving.

Practice, lessons and rentals

A full-length driving range, a large putting green, a chipping and bunker area and video swing analysis sit beside the clubhouse. The pro shop stocks equipment and apparel, rents Callaway clubs for adults and juniors, and books private and group lessons with the club's PGA staff. Golf bikes and carts are available.

Before you book

Guest rates change by season and peak in midsummer, and the season runs from mid-May to mid-October. Tee times can be booked online up to 60 days ahead. Getting there

Parking at the Vail Golf & Nordic Clubhouse is free, and the free Town of Vail bus stops at the Clubhouse stop on its Golf Course route, so a car is optional.

At the Vail Golf & Nordic Clubhouse

Grill on the Gore is the clubhouse restaurant, open to the public, with a patio facing the course and the Gore Range. It suits lunch before or after a round, and seating is first come, first served.

In winter the course becomes the Vail Nordic Center, with groomed cross-country track, snowshoe trails and fat biking run from the same clubhouse.

The clubhouse's Gore Range Room seats up to 160 for weddings, rehearsal dinners and corporate events, and in summer the Wedding Island, reached on foot through an aspen grove, hosts outdoor ceremonies for up to 160 guests. Enquiries go through the Recreation District's group sales team.

Q. Can I rent clubs?+
Yes. Callaway rental sets cost $69 for 18 holes and $59 for nine, with junior sets from Cobra and Callaway. Carts are $26 per person for 18 holes, golf bikes $15 and push carts $9.

Collared shirts are required, with no denim, tank tops or cut-offs. The course is spikeless, children must be at least six, no outside food, drink or coolers are allowed, pets are not allowed on the course or range, and pace of play is 4 hours 7 minutes for 18 holes.

Yes. Grill on the Gore, the clubhouse restaurant, is open to the public and does not take reservations.
