Vail to Breckenridge is about 35 miles by road: east on I-70 over Vail Pass to Exit 203 at Frisco, then south on Colorado 9 for nine miles. Vail Pass, at 10,662 feet, decides how long the drive takes, especially in winter storms and while crews are still working on the road. Without a car, the trip is a Bustang bus from Vail to Frisco and then the free Summit Stage.
The route: I-70 over Vail Pass, then Colorado 9
There is one main road. The Town of Frisco puts Frisco 26 miles from Vail, and Colorado 9 covers the remaining nine miles south to Breckenridge.
- Take I-70 east from Vail. West Vail Pass runs from the East Vail interchange (mile point 180) to the Vail Pass Rest Area at Exit 190, near the summit of Vail Pass.
- Stay on I-70 to Exit 203 at Frisco and head south on Colorado 9 toward Breckenridge. Frisco's Main Street is half a mile off the highway if you want a stop.
- Follow Colorado 9 south for nine miles into town.
The only real alternative goes around the pass instead of over it. Leadville is an hour's drive from Vail on a scenic byway, and Colorado 91 runs from Leadville to I-70 near Copper Mountain, where you rejoin the interstate toward Frisco. It is a long detour, so treat it as a fallback for a day when Vail Pass is closed.
Vail Pass in winter and during construction
- Traction Law. From September 1 through May 31, Colorado's Traction Law can be activated on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison whenever conditions warrant. While it is on, all-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles need tires with at least 3/16-inch tread that are winter, all-weather or mud-and-snow rated, or else chains or an approved traction device. In a severe storm CDOT can move up to the Passenger Vehicle Chain Law, the last step before the highway closes. Current rules are on the CDOT traction law page.
- West Vail Pass construction. CDOT's auxiliary lanes project covers the 10 miles from the East Vail interchange to the Vail Pass Rest Area and is due to finish by the end of 2026. Until then, single-lane closures are possible on any day from mile point 180 to 190, and traffic holds last about 20 minutes, longer while queues clear. The work includes a new avalanche and rockfall system at The Narrows, around mile point 186, meant to reduce extended interstate closures. Stops on the way
- Vail Pass Rest Area (Exit 190). Reopened in September 2025 with expanded parking and restrooms, it connects to the Ten Mile Canyon Trail.
- Frisco and Dillon. Frisco Main Street is the easy stop. Breckenridge Tourism also suggests Lake Dillon and Dillon Dam Road as a scenic way between the two towns.
- On a bike. The Blue River Recpath from Breckenridge to Frisco takes about half an hour and runs downhill.
Without a car
The trip is two rides rather than one ticket, and both start at a bus stop you can reach from Vail.
- Ride Bustang's West Line east from the Vail Transportation Center to the Frisco Transit Center at 1010 Meadow Drive. Several trips run each day; the eastbound timetable is on the route page. Pegasus, the Denver to Avon service, also stops in Vail and Frisco, and advance tickets are recommended.
- Change to the Summit Stage at the same Frisco Transit Center. The Summit Stage is free and runs to Breckenridge.
- Once in Breckenridge, Breck Free Ride buses are free and run in town from 6:15 a.m. to 11:15 p.m.
Driving over for a ski day
Breckenridge runs a Free Skier Shuttle Lot on McCain Road, just outside downtown. Parking there is free from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., with no overnight parking, and the Breck Free Ride Green and Red routes serve it.
