Pack for the season, not the hotel: in Vail the same trip can include snow, strong sun and a summer swing of roughly 35 degrees between the afternoon high and the overnight low, so layers matter more than any one item. A hotel changes only a few things, mostly what you can leave at home and whether you need a swimsuit.
What the weather does month by month
These are NOAA's 1991–2020 monthly normals for the Vail weather station. They are averages, so single days run colder and warmer, and the swing between day and night can be large in every season. Vail lodging sits at about 8,150 feet, and the CDC names cold, low humidity and stronger ultraviolet radiation among the conditions of high altitude.
| Month | Average high | Average low | Average snowfall |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 28.5°F | 6.6°F | 35.3 in |
| February | 33.0°F | 9.2°F | 35.7 in |
| March | 41.7°F | 16.7°F | 28.2 in |
| April | 49.4°F | 23.8°F | 21.2 in |
| May | 60.4°F | 31.0°F | 4.8 in |
| June | 71.4°F | 35.6°F | 0.6 in |
| July | 76.7°F | 41.6°F | 0.0 in |
| August | 74.0°F | 40.8°F | 0.0 in |
| September | 66.6°F | 34.0°F | 0.9 in |
| October | 54.1°F | 25.2°F | 8.6 in |
| November | 37.7°F | 15.1°F | 25.9 in |
| December | 28.0°F | 7.1°F | 28.0 in |
Winter, December to March
A ski day is dressed in layers built from the skin out:
- Base layer in wool or synthetic, never cotton, plus thin wool ski socks; thick socks are not recommended.
- A thin insulating layer such as a fleece or sweater that you can take off and store in a locker at the base.
- A waterproof, breathable jacket and waterproof pants. Non-insulated pants are the more versatile choice because you control what goes underneath.
- Waterproof, insulated gloves, a hat that fits under a helmet, a neck gaiter and goggles.
- Waterproof winter boots for walking around town, plus sunscreen and sunglasses.
The full ski-day list is in the guide to how to dress for Vail. Vail Mountain's planned opening for 2026–27 is November 13, weather permitting.
Spring, April and May
April still averages 21 inches of snow with highs near 49°F, while May reaches 60°F and only 5 inches. A lighter shell or lightly insulated jacket is enough for spring skiing, and on some days you may not need a jacket on the mountain at all. Bring waterproof shoes as well as sneakers, and a fleece for evenings. Ski-season closing dates are set each year, so check them before planning around lifts. Month guides for April and May cover what is open.
Summer, June to August
Average highs run from the low 70s to the upper 70s and lows from the mid 30s to the low 40s, so an evening layer is needed even in July. For hiking and the gondolas, add:
- A waterproof jacket. Summer afternoons often bring thunderstorms, and the gondola and Epic Discovery can pause for lightning.
- Sturdy, waterproof shoes or hiking boots, plus a backpack and extra dry layers for hikes.
- Sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, sunglasses and a water bottle.
- A light jacket for the mountaintop: it is usually at least 10 degrees cooler at the top of the Eagle Bahn Gondola than at the bottom.
Fall, September to November
September highs average about 67°F, October drops to about 54°F and starts to bring snow, and November averages 26 inches with highs in the 30s. Pack a fleece and a light down jacket, sturdy boots for wet or muddy trails, and a warm hat and gloves from October. The timing of aspen color is covered in when the leaves change in Vail, and the month guides for October and November cover events.

The hotel's dining includes Tavernetta Vail, The Remedy and Speyside Café.
Small things to pack for any season
- A reusable water bottle, since staying hydrated matters at altitude.
- Sunscreen and sunglasses, in every month; ultraviolet radiation is stronger at altitude.
- Lip balm and moisturizer; humidity is low at altitude.
- A small daypack for layers you take on and off.
