Five Vail-area shops list road bikes for rent on their own websites, but they do not all rent them the same way: some take reservations, one takes them only for demo bikes, so ask about rates and reservations before you go. Below is what each shop says about its own fleet, followed by the two paved routes most road riders use from town, with distances from Discover Vail.
Where to rent a road bike in Vail
Prices change every season and most of these shops load or quote rates separately, so treat any figure you see elsewhere as unconfirmed until the shop tells you.

Two practical differences matter more than brand names. Wheel Base asks for a day's notice, and Venture Sports only guarantees a bike if you reserve a demo package, so on a summer weekend a plain road bike is not something to leave to chance. Venture Sports also lists door-to-door delivery and pickup at $40 per bike, with a two-bike, two-full-day minimum and 24 hours' notice, which helps if you are staying outside the villages.
Questions to ask before you reserve
- Is it a standard rental or a demo bike, and does that change what is reservable?
- What is included: helmet and lock are stated at Wheel Base, and helmets are required on its rentals; confirm for other shops.
- Can the shop fit the bike to you, and what frame sizes are in stock that week?
- Which route do you plan to ride, and does the gearing suit a 1,500-foot climb?
- Is the rate per day or per 24 hours, and is tax or damage protection extra?
Two paved routes from town
Vail Pass Bike Path
The path runs along I-70, connecting Vail to Copper, 14.2 miles one way with 1,500 feet of elevation gain and a summit at 10,554 feet. A round trip to the summit and back is 28.4 miles; continuing to Copper and back is roughly 28 miles from town.
If you would rather coast downhill, shops sell shuttled tours. Wheel Base runs a van-shuttled Vail Pass tour for the 2026 season at $89 per person with a bike, helmet and shuttle ($59 with your own bike), departing at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. with a 14-rider limit, 17 miles downhill from the top of Vail Pass at 11,300 feet to Lionshead. That elevation and distance differ from the route above; each shop describes its own tour. Venture Sports runs tours three times a day, and Vail Bike Tech offers service to the top of Vail Pass from Lionshead in summer 2026. Gore Creek Recreation Trail
Discover Vail describes the 12-mile paved Gore Creek trail as flat to rolling hills for casual riders and calls the stretch between Vail Village and Lionshead an easy route. Between Vail Village and Lionshead Village it passes through mandatory dismount zones that are for foot traffic only. Altitude and preparation
Vail's lodging sits around 8,150 feet, and the CDC's travel guidance says altitude illness can develop before acclimatization is complete and advises avoiding alcohol for the first 48 hours at high altitude. Fitness does not change the risk. Discover Vail's cycling advice is simpler: dress in layers, carry a rain jacket, and bring water, snacks and sunscreen. The Colorado Department of Transportation runs a bicycle and pedestrian program with rider information. Wheel Base says helmets are required on its rentals and, under its Forest Service permit, on its tours.
