Highcliffe Lodge is a single handcrafted log home on a private acre on Lupine Drive in East Vail, rented whole to one group. Its owners describe it as Yellowstone-inspired rustic design with Ralph Lauren-style polish, and it was featured in Log and Timber Home's annual design issue in May 2020. The lot backs onto national forest and looks out at the Gore Range.

It suits a family reunion, a group of friends or a celebration of up to 12 people who want their own house rather than neighbouring hotel rooms, and who are happy to drive or ride the bus five to ten minutes into the villages. There is no front desk and no shared lobby; the whole place is yours.

The house

Five themed bedrooms sleep up to 12, each with a 4K TV and mountain views; the bathrooms include a steam shower. The shared spaces are built for time together: a private cinema with 8K projection and Dolby Atmos sound, a chef's kitchen, large dining areas, and several balconies and stone terraces for sunrise and sunset. Outside there are gardens, waterfalls, a hot tub and a fire pit, with trails and a small observatory on the hill behind.

Skiing and getting around

Highcliffe is not slopeside. Vail Village and Lionshead are about five minutes by car or ten on the free town bus. In winter the house has boot warmers and ski storage, and guests have partner access to slopeside equipment storage near Gondola One, so skis need not ride the bus each day. Guests also get a free space for one car in the Solaris parking garage in the middle of Vail Village, which removes the usual village parking hunt.

Nearby

The Vail Racquet Club is close by and sells day access to its tennis courts, heated pool, gym and café. Gore Creek is around the corner for fly fishing, and rafting, biking and hiking are all nearby.
