Vail after dark is mostly restaurants, bars with live music and a few seasonal outings: skating in winter, a guided full-moon snowshoe, and concerts at the Ford Amphitheater in summer. It is not a late-night town by big-city standards, and the mountain itself is a daytime operation. The options below are sorted by what kind of evening you want. One caution applies throughout: some Vail restaurants and nightlife spots close for part of the spring and fall shoulder seasons, so it's worth confirming a venue is open before you walk over. A sit-down dinner
Sweet Basil has been in Vail since 1977, and the Michelin Guide highlights it, and Vail Resorts' own travel guide names it as one of two Michelin-recognized restaurants in Vail. It serves New American food, with lunch Wednesday to Sunday, 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and dinner Sunday to Thursday 5 to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 5 to 10 p.m., at 193 Gore Creek Drive. Mountain Standard, a rustic creekside tavern from the creators of Sweet Basil, shares the address and cooks most of its menu over a live wood fire. Its dinner hours match Sweet Basil's, plus an "in-between" service from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Both restaurants take reservations online.
Live music and bars in Vail Village
Several village bars sit within a short walk of each other on and around Bridge Street.
- The Red Lion, open since 1963, has local musicians playing in the late afternoon and again in the evening.
- Pepi's, established in 1964 at Bridge Street and Gore Creek Drive, has a Bavarian-style patio, Austrian beer and live music.
- Shakedown Bar, at the top of Bridge Street, is the village's rock-and-roll venue and keeps capacity limited.
- Bridge Street Bar is the nightclub option, with live music and DJs in separate rooms.
- The George is a basement bar below the Mountain Haus, near the covered bridge, known for its après and late-night crowd.
- Bad Kitty Lounge is a small speakeasy-style bar tucked below Bridge Street.
Cocktails, wine and quieter lounges
For a calmer evening, Root & Flower on Bridge Street offers more than 50 wines by the glass and creative cocktails. The Gambit Bar is the lounge inside The Sebastian, with cocktails, small plates and live entertainment. The Remedy Bar at the Four Seasons has a patio with firepits that run year-round. The King's Club in the Sonnenalp has live music, a fireplace and German beer, and Archetype Distillery's tasting room serves cocktails and flights of its own gin and vodka. Deca + Bol in Solaris Plaza adds a bowling alley to the mix.
Lionshead after dark
Lionshead is quieter than the village, but a few places keep going. Garfinkel's gets livelier inside once the deck crowd moves in, and the Vail Chophouse patio has live music and late-night service into the evening. Bart & Yeti's is a local bar in the Lifthouse Lodge with a patio.
Winter evenings outdoors
- Ice skating. Two outdoor rinks operate each winter: the Alderhof Ice Rink at Vail Square in Lionshead and the Solaris Plaza Ice Rink in Vail Village. Both are open to all ages, rent skates, and typically open around Thanksgiving and close at the end of ski season. Solaris sessions run mainly in the late afternoon and evening, and both rinks host skating shows. The Vail Recreation District's Dobson Ice Arena offers indoor public skating; it typically reopens in November; its calendar has current dates.
- Full Moon Snowshoe. Walking Mountains Science Center runs a guided three-hour snowshoe from 7 to 10 p.m. under the full moon, with stories about lunar science and wildlife. It advises a thermos, a headlamp and insulated winter layers. Its calendar has current dates.
Summer evenings and shows
In summer, the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater is the main draw. Two things Vail evenings don't include
Vail Mountain's gondolas run daytime hours only — there is no starlit or evening gondola ride, aside from whatever special event Vail's own schedule might post.
