The best ski rental shops in Vail are Vista Bahn Ski Rentals, 18 steps from Gondola One and run by the same family since 1977, and American Ski Exchange, which guarantees the lowest rental rates in Vail Village and stays open until 10 p.m. in peak season. In Lionshead, Ski Base publishes some of the lowest prices in town, with Basic packages at $36.99 a day or $27.74 online. If you would rather have gear brought to your door, Black Tie Ski Rentals lists delivery and fitting as free. Almost every Vail shop takes 20% to 30% off for booking online a day or more ahead, and most store rental skis overnight for free.
Prices and policies come from each shop's own website, as recorded on its VailVacay listing (checked September 2026; Vista Bahn re-checked October 11, 2026). Daily rates are per person for skis, boots and poles before tax and fees. Several shops update rates when the 2026/27 season opens (planned November 13, 2026), so confirm before you book.
Skip the rental line: Black Tie Ski Rentals (pick 8) delivers and fits skis or snowboards at your Vail or Beaver Creek lodging, and its packages can be booked on Viator.

The best ski rental shops in Vail, ranked
Ranked on how short the walk is to a lift, published price, what is included (overnight storage, ski valet, delivery) and the shop's record in Vail. Most are independent, family-run shops. The Vail Resorts shops come in at number 9, where the Epic Pass discount makes them the right pick for pass holders.
1. Vista Bahn Ski Rentals
The Gros family has run Vista Bahn since 1977, beside the Vail Ski School at the top of Bridge Street, and it is one of the last owner-operated ski shops in Vail Village. Sacha Gros, a former nine-year U.S. Ski Team member and 1998 Olympian, leads a tuning team that finishes skis by hand. Its website lists daily packages (skis, boots and poles) at $51 Sport, $59 Performance and $67 Demo, with Junior at $42, and it takes 20% off for reserving online in advance, so check its booking page for whether a quote is the online or walk-in price. Evening pickup before your first day starts after 4:30 p.m. Storage of rental gear is free, and it is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the height of the season.
I know the owners of Vista Bahn, and my family has rented a ski locker there for several years.2. American Ski Exchange
The Higgins family has run American Ski Exchange since 1986, less than a minute's walk below Gondola One. Its pitch is price: sport skis from $38 a day, demo skis from $48, up to 30% off for booking online, and a best-price guarantee that applies within Vail Village. In peak season it is open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, so a late arrival can be fitted after dinner. Rental storage is free, and it is one of the few Vail shops that also rents adult ski clothing.
3. Base Camp (Venture Sports)
Venture Sports' Vail Village shop sits downstairs in the Gondola Haus (the old Vista Bahn Building) beside Gondola One, and every rental comes with free storage and ski valet, so your skis spend the night at the lift. It rents Volkl, Kastle, Rossignol, Armada, Salomon, Blizzard, Nordica, Head and DPS skis and Colorado-made Never Summer and Weston boards, tuned before every rental. A demo ski package is $89 walk-in or $80.10 online, and performance is $79 or $71.10. Venture Sports has delivered rentals since 1997, from East Vail to Edwards (970-949-0728).
4. Ski Base
Ski Base opened in 1979 and is owned by Devin Dozier, who grew up skiing Vail. Published 2026/27 rates for 1 to 3 days are Basic $36.99 ($27.74 online), Performance $46.99 ($35.24) and Demo $59.99 ($44.99), with junior packages from $19.99 and cheaper rates for 4 or more days. Online bookings need 48 hours' notice for the 25% discount. Helmets are $8.50 a day, bringing your own boots takes $6 a day off, and overnight storage is free. It is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, December to April.
5. Performance Sports
Performance Sports has rented skis in Lionshead since 1979, and the same two longtime locals still own it. Posted rates, with the online price second: Premium Demo package $75 ($60), Sport package $50 ($40), snowboard package $50 ($40) and kids' package $35 ($28). The 20% online discount needs a booking at least a week before arrival. Rental skis, boards and poles store free overnight, but boots go home with you. Next-day pickup starts after 5 p.m.
6. Charter Sports
Locally owned since 1988, Charter runs counters inside Lion Square Lodge North by the Eagle Bahn Gondola and in two West Vail hotels (Highline Vail and Marriott's StreamSide). Lionshead walk-in rates are $50 Sport, $89 Performance and $99 Demo, 20% less online at least 24 hours ahead. West Vail's online rates are lower for Performance ($55.30) and Demo ($62.30). You can pick up after 1 p.m. the day before, and winter hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. A 20% deposit is taken at booking. See how much ski rentals cost in Vail for the full rate card.
Check Lion Square Lodge prices on Expedia (Charter Sports is in the lodge)
7. Christy Sports
Christy Sports' Kids Rent Free deal gives one child 12 or under a free kids' Sport ski or snowboard package when an adult rents a package for four or more consecutive days. The blackout dates are December 21, 2026 to January 3, 2027. Booking online at least 24 hours ahead saves 20%: an adult demo package is $82.95 walk-in or $66.36 online at the Bridge Street shop, and the Lionshead store lists an adult Sport package at $62.95 or $50.36. Pickup starts at 3 p.m. the day before. Christy does not deliver in Vail.
8. Black Tie Ski Rentals
Reserve ahead and a Black Tie technician brings skis, snowboards, boots and helmets to your hotel, condo or house in Vail or Beaver Creek, fits everyone there at a time you choose and collects it all at the end. Black Tie lists delivery and custom fitting as free. The Vail branch, run by Adam and Katie Bristow, also keeps a storefront in Concert Hall Plaza in west Lionshead. Cancellations more than 48 hours ahead get a full refund.
Booked through Viator, Black Tie's delivered packages (premium or performance skis, or a snowboard) can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before the start time.
9. Vail Sports / Epic Mountain Rentals
Vail Resorts' own rental network has shops at every base: Mountain Plaza beside Gondola One, Golden Peak, where the resort directs ski school families to collect gear, the Arrabelle in Lionshead and the year-round Vail 21 store at the Lionshead entrance. Booking online saves up to 20%, and 2026/27 Epic Pass holders get an extra 20% off through Epic Mountain Rewards. Complimentary delivery is offered at select locations. Under Try Before You Buy, up to two days of rental can be credited toward new gear.
10. Troy's Ski Shop
A group of skiers opened Troy's in 2005, and it still feels more like a clubhouse than a rental counter, with a demo fleet that is new every season and tuned before every outing. A demo package is $95 walk-in or $75 online, and a DPS package is $120 or $95 (it was Vail Village's only official DPS dealer in 2025/26). After five rental days the sixth is free. Tivoli Lodge and Christiania Lodge guests get separate discounted rates.
11. 8150 Ski Shop
This family-owned shop inside Vail's Mountain Haus rents only two grades, both current models: Demo at $74 a day ($59 online) and Performance at $61 ($49 online). Helmets are $15. It does not rent beginner skis. It is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily from November 1 to April 20, and Mountain Haus guests get discounts, free storage and can ask about in-room fittings.
12. Pepi Sports
Pepi and Sheika Gramshammer opened Pepi Sports in 1968. Its lower-level ski shop rents skis, snowboards and touring gear and does custom boot fitting, with sportswear (Bogner, Sportalm) on the floors above. Rentals can be reserved on pepisports.com, anyone can rent, and guests of Hotel Gasthof Gramshammer get 20% off rentals.

How to pay less for ski rentals in Vail
- Book online, ahead. Discounts range from about 10% (Base Camp) to 30% (American Ski Exchange), and most need 24 to 48 hours' notice; Performance Sports needs a week.
- Use your Epic Pass at Vail Sports and Epic Mountain Rentals shops for an extra 20% off.
- Bring children on a 4-day trip to Christy Sports (Kids Rent Free, outside December 21 to January 3).
- Pick up the evening before. Most shops fit you from 1, 3 or 5 p.m. the day before at no charge. Breeze Ski Rentals in Lionshead does not charge for that day if you pick up after 3 p.m.
- Bring your own boots and rent skis only, typically $4 to $6 a day less.
- Rent where you sleep or where you board the lift, so free overnight storage saves carrying skis through the village.
Boots hurting? Surefoot, at the top of Bridge Street since 1987, does custom boot fitting (it does not rent). Cross-country skis and snowshoes rent at the Vail Nordic Center. Browse every shop in the Vail ski rentals directory.
How we picked
We compared the 40-plus ski rental and ski service listings in the VailVacay ski rentals directory. We ranked shops that rent full packages on walking distance to a lift, published price (walk-in and online), what is included (storage, ski valet, delivery, tuning), and how long the shop has operated in Vail. Every price and policy comes from the shop's own website, recorded on its VailVacay listing in September 2026. We spot-checked American Ski Exchange, Ski Base and Vista Bahn on October 10, 2026. Shops that do not rent, such as Surefoot and Mill Creek Sports, are not ranked. Nobody paid to be included.
